Up Date!

„Willkommen in KOSEI KENDO CLUB“, this is how we were greeted here in the club’s monthly flyer in (almost) perfect German. As German Kendo-ka we could not have wished for a warmer welcome after a long search for a suitable Kendo dojo in Kyoto.Since spring 2014 we, Sven Rudolph (43) and Tamara Schneider (39), have been living in Kyoto, where we work as professor for economics at Kyoto University and lecturer for German culture and language at Kyoiku University in Osaka. In Germany, we started doing kendo in 2007 and practiced in the north Hessian Brothers-Grimm-City Kassel (http://kendoka-kassel.de/). In 2013, we passed our shodan examination at Lindow Gasshuku under the critical eyes of Sato-sensei (8th Dan Hanshi), before we came to Kyoto in early 2014th. Besides our jobs and studying the Japanese language, learning more about kendo at the origin was one of our major motivations to come here. Here at Kosei Kendo Club in Shiga Prefecture near Lake Biwa and the Japanese cultural capital Kyoto we found what we had been looking for. Since early 2015 we have been enjoying the open and friendly atmosphere here in. This atmosphere results from three major club principles: community, internationality and taking much pleasure in doing Kendo at any age. We have learned a lot about kendo techniques and the art of the sword in weekly, multilingual training sessions conducted by Kishimoto-san (6th Dan), a passionate teacher with a great sense of joy of the sport, as well as by visiting other dojo close by. But in addition, throughout activities such as the welcome barbecue in spring specifically dedicated to us and the Mochitsuki Party in winter we have made many new friends. Thus, we are very much looking forward look to many more training sessions and joint activities with old and new (international) members of Kosei Kendo Club.

English:
“Kendo around the world”
It was autumn of 1992 in Paris, France, I followed my friend on the tatami at the University to practice Taekwondo. In the neighboring room, elegant and graceful violet silhouettes were fighting with bamboo swords, the neon light shiny glaze reflected on the helmet. It was a kind of fencing with more freedom as the movements were not limited to a narrow track. Elegant and dynamic! At that time, I even didn’t know the name of this practice. I learned in a dictionary and encyclopedia, it is called: Kendo. Rules remained quite obscure for me, and I could not understand whether a point was won or not. I never had the chance to practice it in Paris, but the mesmerizing memory of the violet silhouettes is still very vivid in my mind. At that time, I think I see kendo as very romantic.
It was more than a decade later in Otsu, Japan. I was a young father looking at spending a fun active time with his little son. Kendo came into my mind at the big surprise of my spouse. After a few searches on the internet, I drove 30km north of Otsu to the Kosei kendo club in Wani! Its founder Kishimoto sensei warmly welcomed us. Despite not speaking
Japanese, I quickly felt at home in the club, and so did my son. After the first training, the rules were yet unclear, but I understood the different strikes. However, knowing how to do o-men was just the beginning! Most of my fight was against my own body and mind. It took me more than a year before starting to enjoy kendo. This experience stayed for a few years, then I took a break.
A few years later in 2013, I returned to Kosei kendo club. Again I was warmly welcomed, Kosei kendo club was always so friendly. Old members and new members, each of them helped me to progress by sharing their knowledge and experience. For me, kendo became a quest to approach the perfect movement at the perfect time. I found the process of this quest very similar to that of research: experience, analysis, interpret, improve. Once you put on your men, the research for a better hit is the only thing that matters until the end of the session. My early image of romantic kendo turns into a quest for perfection.
Now it is March 2022, after several pauses due to the pandemic and I went for (I hope not) an ultimate training at Kosei Kendo club. On the way, I see the beautiful lake Biwa and its surrounding mounts, indeed every Saturday morning kendo was also the feeling to go on a small trip. It brings back the memory of all the outside activities with Kosei kendo club members, BBQ, dodgeball with children, nomikai, and karaoke! During kendo training, I tried to play with everybody, but as usual time flies. Already the end of the session, and I remove my men. I thank everybody and express how I am glad to experience Kendo with all of them. 24 years in Japan will not have been the same without kendo, without all kendo friends, without Kishimoto sensei. In a few weeks, I will leave Japan and settle into a new life in the USA, I will surely play Kendo there, and look for any opportunity to visit Kosei Kendo club.
